Getting a tattoo is only the beginning. How you care for your skin afterward plays a major role in how your tattoo heals and looks long-term. At 3 of Spades Hanoi Tattoo, we want every client to leave with more than a beautiful tattoo.
This guide walks you through the healing process, from the moment you leave our studio to the day your tattoo is fully healed.

What Should You Do in the First 24 Hours?
Your fresh tattoo is a healing wound. The priority is to protect it from dirt, bacteria, friction, and unnecessary handling.
Keep the Dressing as Instructed
Leave the protective covering in place for the time recommended by your artist and the dressing manufacturer.
Wash Your Hands First
Only touch your tattoo with clean hands, especially when cleaning or removing a dressing.
Wear Clean, Loose Clothing
Choose breathable clothes that won’t rub, stick to or put pressure on your fresh tattoo.
Take It Easy
Avoid strenuous workouts, excessive sweating and activities that may irritate or contaminate the area.
How Long Should You Keep Second Skin On?

Second Skin is a transparent adhesive film that acts as a protective barrier while your tattoo begins healing. A small pocket of plasma, blood, and excess ink beneath the film can be normal. Follow the exact wear time given by your artist and the product instructions. For the dressing used at our studio, your artist may recommend keeping it on for around 3–5 days if it remains sealed, clean, and comfortable.
What if Second Skin peels off early?

Don’t panic. Your tattoo can heal perfectly well without Second Skin.
Heat, humidity, sweating, and friction can loosen the adhesive, especially in Hanoi.
Check the Seal
If only a small edge lifts but the tattoo remains fully sealed, contact your artist for advice. If the seal breaks, the tattoo is exposed, or fluid leaks out, remove the compromised film completely.
Remove It Gently
Wash your hands, then remove the film slowly under lukewarm running water. Never reuse the old dressing or pull it off aggressively.
Wash and Dry
Clean with mild, fragrance-free soap, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Let the area air-dry.
Continue Standard Aftercare
Apply a very thin layer of recommended fragrance-free moisturizer. Do not automatically apply a new film unless your artist has advised you to use a fresh, sterile dressing.
Never patch a compromised dressing with ordinary tape. If the area develops a rash, blisters, or significant irritation, remove the dressing and seek appropriate medical advice.
How Should You Clean and Moisturize a New Tattoo?

Once the dressing is removed after 3 days, gentle cleaning and light moisturizing become the foundation of your routine.
PLEASE FOLLOW THIS cleaning routine
What Should You Avoid While Your Tattoo Heals?
| Activity | What to do |
|---|---|
| Showering | Short showers are fine; don’t soak the tattoo. |
| Swimming | Avoid pools, oceans, lakes,s, and hot tubs until fully healed. |
| Exercise | Pause strenuous activity and avoid excessive sweat or friction at first. |
| Sun exposure | Keep fresh tattooed skin out of direct sunlight. |

| Scratching | Never scratch, pick or peel your tattoo. |
| Tight clothing | Avoid rubbing, pressure,e and fabric sticking to the tattoo. |
What Are the Signs of Infection?
Some tenderness, mild redness, and light peeling can be part of normal healing. However, seek medical attention promptly if you notice spreading or worsening redness, increasing pain or warmth, yellow or green pus, red streaks, fever or chills. Do not try to treat a suspected infection with tattoo ointment alone.
How Can You Keep Your Tattoo Looking Fresh?
After the tattoo has completely healed, long-term care is simple:
- Moisturize your skin regularly.
- Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on healed tattooed skin.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
- Avoid tanning beds and excessive UV exposure.
- Keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
Some natural fading over time is normal. Consistent sun protection and good skin care help preserve the appearance of your tattoo.
Tattoo Aftercare: Frequently Asked Questions
01. How long does a tattoo take to heal completely?
The surface commonly heals in around 2–4 weeks, but deeper skin recovery can take longer depending on the tattoo and individual.
02. Is it normal for a tattoo to leak ink?
Small amounts of plasma, blood and excess ink may collect under the dressing or appear during the first few days.
03. What if Second Skin falls off on the first day?
If the seal breaks or the tattoo is exposed, remove the compromised film, gently wash the tattoo, pat dry and continue standard aftercare. Contact your artist for advice.
04. Should I let my tattoo dry out completely?
No. Keep it clean and lightly moisturized. Avoid both excessive dryness and heavy layers of ointment.
05. Can I sleep with my new tattoo uncovered?
Yes, if your bedding is clean and the tattoo is protected from friction and contamination. Follow your artist’s instructions if the dressing is still in place.
06. When can I expose my tattoo to sunlight?
Avoid direct sunlight while your tattoo is healing. Once fully healed, protect it with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
07. Do I need a tattoo touch-up?
Not every tattoo needs a touch-up. If you notice uneven pigment or areas that have not healed as expected, contact your artist for an assessment. We recommend checking with your artist around 4–6 weeks after your session if you have concerns.
